Darrell's heroics deny Boulevard
A last-gasp goal from Vernon Eve earned Boulevard a share of the spoils with Devonshire Colts yesterday.
But the after match talking point at St. David's were the goalkeeping heroics of Colts' Randy Darrell.
Darrell pulled off a stunning save to deny Eve from close range in the 85th minute.
Eve's powerful header after a carefully floated cross from the left by Boulevard's ace striker Dwight Warren appeared goalbound.
But an airborne Darrell had other ideas as he managed to tip the ball over the bar with one hand.
The instinctive save, soon followed by another, drew cries of disbelief from the benches of both teams.
Boulevard's increasingly effective Warren-Eve combination were not to be denied, however.
Just three minutes later they linked up in virtually identical fashion.
Warren drilled the ball from the left across Colts' penalty area -- this time along the ground -- and found an unmarked Eve on the far post.
Even Darrell could do nothing, as a grateful Eve dashed in to prod the ball over the line.
The 88th minute strike was just rewards for a spirited fightback by the Blazers who had fallen behind soon after half-time.
Colts' Jah Samuels cracked the ball into the right hand corner of Mitchell Steede's net in the 46th minute after latching on to a pass from the left wing by Craig Smith.
Samuels, hovering around the 18-yard area, controlled the ball sweetly, before driving it beyond the despairing lunge of Steede.
The second half action followed a lacklustre opening 45 minutes which saw both teams struggle to find their touch in a swirling wind.
Colts -- with several key regular players missing because of injuries or Under-23 duty -- fielded a largely makeshift team, as did Boulevard.
It was only to be expected, therefore, that both sides took time to feel each other out and build up an understanding among themselves.
The first to nearly claim blood were the Blazers.
Striker Vernon Symonds made a hash of things after being presented with an open goal in the fifth minute.
The ball had rebounded to him off Darrell, who had come off his line to block a shot by Warren.
With Darrell out of position, Symonds could have lobbed the ball home from 14 yards, but he completely mistimed his shot.
It was to be the first of three gilt-edged opportunities for Symonds in the match. All of them were squandered.
Boulevard's cause wasn't helped when Neil Robinson sustained an ankle injury in the 34th minute, and was replaced by Mitchell Trott.
Colts, with Samuels particularly impressive, went on to take the match to Boulevard and deserved to take the lead.
But it seemed they were content to sit on their laurels, and allowed the Blazers to get back into the match.
In the 54th minute the inspirational Warren went desperately close when he unleashed a ferocious shot from 35 yards.
The ball smashed against the crossbar, denying the striker a contender for goal of the season.
