Duffy and Abbott hang on to win

Ironman competition where participants race over vast distances, taking several hours to complete and severely testing physical and mental fortitude.

The theme of last weekend's Pirates Port/Island Press All Comers Fun Triathlons was that of `enjoyment', with a wide range of events provided for people of all ages -- individuals and teams.

The most drama came in the 11-15 junior advanced category, where Tyler Abbott and Flora Duffy took overall wins in covering the 300-metre swim, 15-kilometre bike and three-kilometre run. Abbott successfully held off spirited challenges by Geoffrey and Chayce Smith, while Ashley Kirkpatrick and Chloe Kempe pushed Duffy hard.

In the girls 7-8 category Ashley Fox took first among the girls over Alyssa Rose and Rebecca Sharpe, with Marc Smith beating Dorian Armstrong and Dominic White to the tape.

Timothy Fox emerged as the boys 9-10 champion over Ricky Sousa and Alexander McManus, while Emily Rowe edged Caitlin Conyers and Lily Fowle in the girls' section.

The girls 11-12 division witnessed Alexis Barker first followed by Nea Fowle.

A strong overall performance from Dominique Nanette was enough to better a closing Coyatito Smith in the boy's section.

Meanwhile, the closest finish had Richard Collis and Gregory Rose finish in a dead heat among the boys 13-15 category, while Mandy Oliver stood alone atop the podium on the girls' side.

The senior individual sprint event -- 750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike, five-kilometre run -- had Jonathan Herring capture his second consecutive season title, leading all the way and finishing six minutes ahead of younger rivals Nick Taylor and brother Matthew Herring.

The older Herring exited the water with a two-minute advantage over his sibling, extended that over the cycle course and put the hammer down with the fastest run split of the day.

Likewise, Lea Butterfield seized the women's crown.
