Exposure for young basketballers
for the U.S. today to take part in the highly rated University of Michigan Summer Basketball Camp.
The youngsters will get expert instruction from the Wolverines' head coach Steve Fisher, famous for leading a group of talented freshmen -- known as the Fab Five and including current NBA stars Chris Webber, Jawan Howard and Jalen Rose -- to the 1992 NCAA finals.
Chaperon Freddie Evans, who is the president of the Bermuda Basketball Association and organised the venture, yesterday said that the potential benefit to the boys was great, with the possibility of some coming away with scholarships or at least being put in better position to earn them in the future.
"Ijumo Hayward and Winston Johnson who got a total scholarship to Severn Prep School are just two who got scholarships as a direct result of participating in overseas camps,'' explained Evans, starting what will be a hectic summer of basketball. "The experience and exposure to intense basketball training under such a professional environment will improve their game, knowledge and skill level.
"Right now they're all excited about going.'' Included in the travelling party are: Javin Taylor, Johnson, Jason Farrington, Ira Phillip, Kavan Tucker, Anthony King, Ben Barclay, Tyler Owen, Andrew Owen and Derek Lindo.
The aforementioned group returns next Friday, but Evans will be on the move again the next day with a smaller group of three, with the destination being the University of Maryland for a week-long visit to the institution that produced the first pick in this year's NBA draft, forward Joe Smith.
Evans' own camp -- the Freddie Evans Whitney Institute Basketball Camp -- will be held July 17-21 and despite the pullout of the feature attraction, former `Dream Team' and NBA coach turned television analyst Chuck Daly, the schoolteacher said that a treat still existed for those interested.
Remaining on the list of guest instructors are former Chicago Bulls guard Craig Hodges along with current New Jersey Nets coach Butch Beard, French national team member Claude Cavallo, as well as a slew of other overseas college coaches and NBA assistants.
