Fight night fireworks: Locals shine on Police boxing card
Bermuda Police Boxing Section celebrated Guy Fawkes night in style on Friday with a nine-bout card featuring old adversaries from the Boston and Denver Police Departments.
And on a show which saw three women's fights -- the first to be held in Bermuda -- locals came away with four wins and three losses. The two other fights were between overseas boxers.
In front of an estimated crowd of 1,200 at the Stonington College gymnasium, Bermuda's Billy Tempest-Mitchell opened the evening with a bout against Denver trooper Don Volentle. And his lack of match fitness was exposed in the third round as Volentle took advantage of his opponent's slow reactions to earn a split points decision.
Next up was the first female fight in which Bermuda's Zara Payne scored a split points win over Denver's Paulette Diaz, although Diaz, a grandmother-to-be, showed plenty of spirit in a three round slugfest.
Bermuda then got another victory in the first heavyweight fight of the night as local Sean (Mr. Wonderful) Weaver stepped into the ring against trooper Pete Neilly.
Weaver put Neilly on the canvas in the first round with an explosive right cross but then had to take a standing count in the second as Neilly fought back with a series of lefts and rights.
Round three saw desperate punching from both men although Weaver got the decision after landing a number of solid rights.
Bout four was ultimately voted `Fight of the Night' as Bermuda's Jerome Caines went toe to toe with trooper Gerald Roybal. Both men exhibited good skills but it was Caines who was more accurate as he earned a unanimous decision.
Then in the second ladies' fight, Meredith Brady, cheered on by a number of family and friends, proved far too strong for Denver's Loreen Valverde. Brady overwhelmed her opponent, whose corner threw in the towel in the third round.
Valverde's husband, Mario, stepped up next and restored family pride with an exhibition of fighting which won him the trophy for `Most Stylish Boxer' and a points victory over Boston's Paul Kastinakas.
Bout seven proved something of a mismatch as Bermuda's Raygean Raynor took on the tough Craig Feldmann from Denver. Although Raynor started well, it was soon obvious that his opponent would be too strong as he landed uppercuts at will. Raynor's corner threw in the towel at the start of round two to prevent their youngster from further injury.
In the evening's penultimate fight, local Mike Atterbury exchanged lefts and rights with Boston's Kevin Hope but eventually ran out of steam in the third round. Hope was voted `Most Aggressive Boxer'. In the night's finale, two visiting females slugged it out, Jenny Anier from Boston earning a points decision over Abby Hurd from Denver.
