First final fails to produce winner

Dandy Town and Somerset left it all to play for tomorrow at Lord's after last night's first final at Devonshire Rec. failed to give either team an advantage.

For a long time last night it looked as though Reggie Tucker's third minute goal would give the Trojans the edge going into the second match. But seasoned campaigner Wayne Campbell wiped out that advantage with an equaliser 12 minutes from the end.

Both had good opportunities last night to make a significant start to the two-leg final but most of the chances went begging. Now, for only the second time in the tournament's history, the two finalists will go into the second final on even terms.

The last time that happened was in 1992-93 when Somerset drew 1-1 with PHC in the first final before winning 2-0 in the second to take the trophy for the first time.

Early in last night's match they looked in the mood for a second triumph, taking an early lead against a Dandy Town side that was still settling down.

The goal came from captain and leading scorer, Tucker, after a shot from Kwame Tucker on the edge of the penalty area was parried by the diving Anthony Manders. The ball bounced free just far enough for Tucker to pounce and poke home his sixth goal of the season.

Town almost equalised in the eighth minute when a shot from an angle on the left by Walter Musson looked like sneaking in under the crossbar before Andre Hendrickson tipped it over the bar.

Musson, as he was against PHC in the semi-final two days earlier, was a threat down the flank and a freekick from him in the 12th minute was deflected around the far post for another corner with no Town player in position to apply that decisive touch in a crowded area.

Most of Town's raids in the first half were concentrated down Musson's flank as fullback Andrew Rahman was kept busy. At the other end Somerset were using Tucker's sneaky runs from midfield to good effect.

Right on half-time a Tucker freekick on the right was knocked over to the far post where Jerry Webb put his effort wide from a good position.

Not surprisingly Town stepped up the pressure at the start of the second half and soon made their first substitution when they brought on Ross Parsons for Kris Martin in the 62nd minute. Minutes earlier Somerset were forced into their first substitution when Sean Simmons replaced the injured Kwame Tucker.

Hendrickson did well to smother a Troy Lewis shot at the near post after he drove in a low shot following a corner in the 62nd minute. Town kept on the pressure with three straight corners but still could not find a way through.

Somerset brought on Curtis Grant to replace the lacking Webb in the 74th minute but it was Town who scored in the 78th to level it up.

Musson flighted in an inswinging freekick from the right side of the box and Campbell at the far post scored with a firm header.

Just as decisive could be the injury to Musson five minutes from the end when he was taken off after taking a blow behind his left knee.

He spent several minutes receiving treatment behind the goal and was limping heavilyon the leg as he made his way to the dressing room. His availability for the second match tomorrow will make a big difference to Town's hopes of becoming only the second team to win two straight Dudley Eve titles.

The match starts at 2.30 and if the teams are still tied after 90 minutes then extra time and then penalty kicks will come into effect.

Dandy Stars beat a short-handed Somerset Terminators team 5-0 in a women's match last night as four of the goals came in the second half. Carol Ann Wade 23rd minute goal was all that separated the teams in the first half but things got better for Dandy Stars after the restart as they raced to a comfortable win.

Wade scored a second while Shawnette Smith, who will captain the Bermuda Select against the touring St. Francis Xavier College in their opening match tomorrow at St. David's, also got amongst the scoring as did Rebecca Sousa (penalty) and Shermel Dickinson.
