Holders Town through to next round

Champions Dandy Town moved into the next round of the Friendship Trophy last night at Somerset as Colts paid for a lacklustre performance in the first half.

Town were comfortably in front by two goals at the half following strikes by Wayne Campbell and Darron Simons. And though Colts looked a more spirited side in the second half and pulled a goal back, Town settled the match with a second goal from Simons.

Play was pretty even during the first quarter of an hour though Town, with Simons and Carlos Smith hungry up front, looked the more likely of the teams to break the deadlock. They did so in the 15th minute when Campbell scored from a scramble in the box after a corner on the right was not cleared by the Colts defence.

Simons gave Town a comfortable half-time lead with his eighth goal of the season in the 42nd minute when he chested down a pass on the edge of the box and despite the close attention of Anthony Wilson created enough space to slot the ball home.

A stern talk from coach Lorenzo Symonds at the half brought out a new attitude in his players at the restart as the game quickly turned around.

Wilson, once a Town defender, saw a volley drop just over the bar in the 47th minute as Colts came firing back and soon after a good cross from the left by Craig Smith almost produced a goal as Aljame Zuill tried to control the ball and lost his chance from a good position.

The introduction of diminutive Damon Ming in the 50th minute for the injured Ray Jones proved a decisive move as five minutes later he played a part in the Colts goal.

Ellington Weldon intercepted a pass from Diallo Sharrieff and worked a quick one-two with Ming before getting behind the Town defence on the left and driving a firm shot past Cymande Davis who was appeared to be anticipating a cross.

After that Harrison Trott and Weldon both went close, the later with a spectacular over kick, as Colts kept Town under pressure.

Town made a double substitution in the 70th minute bringing on Lionel Furbert and Joey Weeks for Michael Wells and the injured Lloyd Christopher as the speed of Ming for Colts continued to cause problems.

As the match hung in the balance, Town wrapped it up in the 81st minute when good work on the left resulted in Simons tapping in the cross as a heavy downpour came. Town played out the last five minutes with 10 men when Simons was carried off with a leg injury.
