Juniors rally around Mouse
An injury to Bermuda captain Marlon Dill threatened to overshadow a superb performance from his team in a pulsating tie against Barbados in the International Youth Tournament at BAA Field last night.
Dill, an inspirational figure on the right hand flank, was rushed to hospital five minutes from the end of the match after falling awkwardly in a collision with Barbados midfielder Nigel Desrivieres.
Desrivieres was also stretchered off after apparently injuring ribs in the incident. Both players stretched for a loose ball just in front of the Bermuda team bench and fell to the ground in agony. Dill was motionless for a number of minutes but coach Mark Trott suggested afterwards the injury had looked worse than it was.
"He was placed in a neck brace as a precautionary measure,'' said Trott. "He said he was feeling a bit dizzy and so it was felt it was better to get him to hospital rather than having him waking up in the middle of the night at Warwick Camp and not feeling too well.
"It's kind of deja vu for him because he dislocated his shoulder around this time in last year's tournament. Hopefully it will be nothing too serious and he'll be able to come back because he's a real inspiration.'' Dill, nicknamed Mouse, had scurried up and down the right flank, his pace causing the Barbados back line plenty of headaches all evening. But the tireless wing back had also shown a great willingness to help out his own defence when Barbados, no slouches up front themselves, threatened on the break.
Bermuda, in fact, dominated long periods of the second half after getting back on level terms eight minutes after the interval. Shakai Minors will claim the goal, but it was Barbados' Dale Griffith who applied the final touch, turning Minors' downward header from Nasir Wade's deep cross into the net.
Barbados, strong and powerful with the speedy Riviere Williams a constant source of concern for Bermuda's rearguard, had grabbed the lead after 36 minutes of non-stop action. The unfortunate Kingsley Mundy miscontrolled a ball on his thigh and Jason King nipped in and blasted past Zane Hendrickson.
It was a harsh blow for the hosts who had fashioned several good opportunities at the other end.
Raymond Beach was unlucky on two occasions. First, after just seven minutes, he arrived on the far post to meet Dill's long cross but his header went just the wrong side of the upright. Then he saw his low shot blocked by Barbados keeper Corey Spencer Layne and his follow up header go narrowly wide. Beach displayed his versatility by leaping to head off his own line when Jeffrey Williams' header from a corner seemed destined for the net minutes later.
A delighted Trott, who is shaping an exciting and motivated side, said afterwards: "At half time we felt we had let ourselves down. We should have been 2-0 up. I thought Raymond (Beach) showed what a class player he is tonight. We are now feeling that our destiny is in our own hands.'' Glasgow Rangers 3 US 0 Rangers winger Iain Russell scored two more goals as his team ran out worthy winners in last night's opening game.
Russell, who scored in the Scots' 3-2 defeat by Barbados, cleverly chipped home a free kick awarded inside the US box for time-wasting by goalkeeper Alex Maslow in the 28th minute and added a penalty after Kevin Morrison's jinking run was halted unfairly by Justin Moore.
Substitute Alan Laidlaw added a third in stoppage time as his side adapted far better to the heat than they had a night earlier. Goalkeeper Graeme Smith was in fine form, blocking two late efforts from US substitute Matt Richards.
