Keishon's goal settles goalfest

Keishon Smith smartly headed home the winning goal four minutes into injury time to enable Devonshire Colts to come from behind to defeat Devonshire Cougars in this First Division game at Devonshire Rec.

In a match-up that produced a dull, scoreless amd ineventful first half, the teams lifted their tempo when play restarted for the second half -- and the fans were rewarded with a feast of goals.

Cougars' skipper Wali Salaam got things rolling for them after 66 minutes when he hit the opening goal, brilliantly beating two defenders and scoring from close in after receiving a fine cross from substitute Ryan Swan.

But the 1-0 lead was short-lived as Colts levelled the scoring after 75 minutes when substitute Marvin Belboda astonishingly volleyed home a cross from another sub Jerome Laws from 14 yards.

Play see-sawed for the rest of the game with one team attacking and the other responding with quick counter-attacks -- a trend which was in sharp contrast to the first half when both attacks struggled as the defences dominated.

Belboda continued to make an impact with his presence and it was his cross after 82 minutes that found Aljame Zuill with the wiry striker heading home from close in to put Colts ahead 2-1.

But hard-working Cougars midfielder George Dyer levelled the scores two minutes later when he stroked the ball home from a scramble about 12 yards out.

However Colts refused to throw in the towell and it was Zuill, who spent the entire first half running off-side, who put them back in front 3-2 after 89 minutes when he stroked home what was thought to be the clincher.

But Cougars were far from dead, fighting their way back into the game with a late equaliser from substitute Kaiwon Saltus after 90 minutes when he fired the ball home from 13 yards.

With the game running into injury time Colts quickly composed themselves and pinned their opponents down, opening gapping holes in their defence.

It wasn't a surprise when Smith smartly climbed above the defence to head home what proved to be the winning goal from a corner taken by Belboda who was a star sub for the team on the night by injecting a lot of enthusiam into what was a jaded attack until his arrival.

The opening half lacked any real drama, the best chance coming when Cougars' goalkeeper Ricky Brangman dived full length to his right to prevent a blast from Melchisedec Gibbons from going into goal after 28 minutes.

The loss left Cougars deep in the relegation zone, still without a win in six games, while Colts moved into a four-way tie for first place.

But the Zebras had to sweat it out for victory, finally putting the game out of reach only in the second half after Paget had restricted them to just a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Although PHC managed a one-goal lead at the break Paget played well enough in the opening half to deserve being tied at the interval. However, a series of missed opportunities led to their downfall.

Scoring for PHC in the first half were Stephen Astwood after seven minutes and Stephen Trott after 16 minutes. Patrick Russell pulled one back for Paget after 35 minutes.

Kenny Mills put PHC ahead 3-1 after 49 minutes and veteran player-coach Sammy Swan made it 4-1 from the penalty spot after 72 minutes.

Jermal Stevens fired a penalty home for Paget after 75 minutes making it 4-2 but PHC finished it off after 80 minutes when Mills added their final goal.
