Khari's double keeps Wolves in contention

Wolves' hopes of a first ever spot in the Dudley Eve competition were almost dashed by a light failure at Devonshire Rec. which stopped play for 27 minutes late in the second half.

Just 13 minutes were left in the game when the switch on a corner pole was accidently tripped, forcing the eastern end into near darkness. Club officials shut down the lights on the club end of the field and then switched them back on as both teams -- Wolves especially -- waited anxiously for the match to restart.

And when play did finally resume, last season's Second Division champions capped off the long wait by adding a third goal to their two in the first half to romp to their biggest win of the season.

College student Khari Sharrieff made a noticeable difference in the attack as he marked his first game of the season with two of the goals while Ellington Weldon struck the first against his former team. The win avenged Wolves' 2-0 loss to Colts in the FA Cup last weekend and lifts them to fourth place in the First Division standings.

Colts had a good chance to break the deadlock after just 69 seconds when a ball into the penalty area dropped for Melchisedec Gibbons who volleyed inches over the bar from right in front of goal.

After settling down, Wolves took the lead in the 26th minute when Weldon scored from what looked like an intended cross from the right side of the penalty box... the ball beating Troy Hall at the near post before finding the net at the far post.

Keeper Hewvonnie Brown made a good save to deny Aljame Zuill at the other end after Keishon Smith had pulled the ball back into his path. Colts stepped up their game, forcing three quick corners on the left side which came to nothing as the Wolves defence, marshalled by Nakia Smith in the absence of Leonard Hypolite, stood firm.

Colts were hit by a second goal three minutes before the break when a cross to the far post saw Sharrieff beat Shannon Burgess to a challenge and slip the ball past Hall.

Sharrieff earned himself a yellow card right at the break when he kicked the ball away after 'keeper Hall had put it down to take a freekick.

Colts, in desperate need of some pep in their attack, brought on Marvin Belboda early in the second half and he started to create some openings with Zuill and Smith.

Belboda had a header saved by Brown after a good buildup involving Burgess resulted in Zuill providing the cross into the middle for Belboda.

The victory was in the bag by the time Sharrieff added the third goal in the final minute. Tori Davis flighted in a freekick from the right side and Sharrieff connected with a firm, free header which 'keeper Hall touched but could not keep out.

Paget 4 Prospect 0 Hitman Jermayn Pond scored a second half hat-trick, including twice in the last three minutes, as Paget moved three places up the Second Division tables with a comfortable victory in the opening match.

All the goals came in the second half as Paget, second from bottom going into the match, broke the deadlock in the 47th minute through Alfred Simmons.

Pond then got in on the act, scoring in the 79th, 87th and 90th minutes to complete his hat-trick and take his tally for the season to 14.
