Late double lets Cougars off the hook

CORRECTION Due to a reporter's error, Sunday's First Division result between Devonshire Cougars and Boulevard was listed in yesterday's Royal Gazette as 2-2. Cougars, in fact, won the game 2-1.

Referee Tony Mouchette confirmed yesterday that a `goal' scored by Boulevard early in the first half had been ruled offside.

We apologise for this mistake.

Dev Cougars 2 Boulevard 2 It doesn't pay to leave early when Devonshire Cougars are at home.

Nine days ago, in their last league fixture against neighbours Colts, five goals flew in in a frantic final eight minutes.

Yesterday, in a First Division basement battle against Boulevard at Devonshire Rec, they were at it again, clawing back from two goals down to grab a barely deserved point in the last six minutes.

In truth, though, the Blazers will be kicking themselves for not taking all three and putting daylight between them and Cougars at the bottom of the table after opening up a two goal cushion in the first five minutes.

But in a mad couple of minutes they conceeded an unnecessary penalty and a comical own goal that kept them nestling just above the relegation zone.

Cougars were looking for revenge for Boulevard's midweek victory over them in the Friendship Trophy, but that looked a distant prospect as Boulevard swept into a two-goal lead, courtesy of Taur Caisey and some inept defending.

In the fourth minute Jamel Warren sent in a free kick from deep on the left and the ball ballooned into the path of the unmarked Caisey who side-footed a volley through advancing goalkeeper Tori Henry's legs.

Barely 60 seconds later Henry dropped a high ball and it seemed to be heading for the unguarded net before Caisey arrived on the far post to make sure.

Henry partially redeemed himself, blocking Vernon Phillips' strike after a lovely backheel on the edge of the box by Dwight Warren as Cougars, yet to win this season, struggled to make any impression up front.

Cougars had to wait until the 55th minute to trouble a solid Boulevard rearguard. Stephen Coddington's jinking run down the right earned Cougars a corner off Jamel Warren.

Wali Salaam sent the ball in high to the far post where goalkeeper Lynn Tucker flapped ineffectively, but Shawn Smith could not direct his header on target.

Cougars sent on Cory Goddard and Sherritt Hewey for Salaam and Mark Smith as they sought some inspiration up front but it was Boulevard who almost grabbed a third in the 68th minute -- again through Taur Caisey.

Wendell Swan upended Phillips on the right edge of the box. Phillips recovered to square the free kick to Caisey, whose powerful left foot shot came back down off the crossbar.

Boulevard were cruising to victory until the 84th minute when Ryan Swan swung in a free kick from the left. There was no apparent danger but a Boulevard hand went up and flapped at the ball.

Referee Anthony Mouchette, at the centre of controversy for denying Cougars a penalty in the Friendship Trophy encounter, was well positioned and pointed directly to the spot. Shawn Smith did the rest, coolly sending Tucker the wrong way.

Boulevard still didn't read the danger signals and three minutes later Mitchell Trott misconnected as he tried to head clear a free kick and watched in horror as the ball squeezed between the post and goalkeeper Tucker.

Six minutes into stoppage time, Cougars could have clinched an unlikely victory as Maxwell Dill sent Kaiwon Saltus charging goalwards on the left.

Saltus cut inside, evaded one challenge and then sent a searing shot inches over.
