New boys Wolves aim to upset the odds
four in the Coca Cola standings play their first matches in the Dudley Eve Tournament tonight at Somerset.
Wolves will make their debut in the double-elimination event when they meet North Village in the 7.00 opener while Vasco begin defence of their title against Dandy Town in the 9.00 match.
While Wolves are the new boys to the tournanent, which began 20 years ago, the other three teams have all won the title at least twice. And with the majority of their team also playing in the First Division for the first time, Wolves can rightly be considered the tournament underdogs.
However, results of their last two matches -- 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Colts and Cougars -- would suggest that they could be up to the task. Certainly it would appear they are reaching form at the right time.
College students will play a big part in the outcome of the early match, with Wolves relying on Joey Rego, John Barry Nusum, Khari Sharrieff and Vincent Minors while Village have Dwayne (Streaker) Adams back doing a sterling job between the posts.
Long rated as the Island's top goalkeeper, Adams returned to the Village team for the first time in more than a year and won the man of the match award in his first outing on Sunday as the Red Devils beat Somerset.
Village have consistently been in the top four in the standings this season without Adams, as Nyon Steede has done a sterling job as their first choice goalkeeper.
Vasco, winners of the cup twice in the last three years, take on unpredictable Dandy Town, the first team to qualify this year. A major hole has been created in the Vasco defence for tonight's game with the suspension of Kentoine Jennings for one match after another booking on Sunday.
Jennings has been the rock in the Vasco defence for the last few years and his absence will give Town some encouragement. Two of their main strikers, Darron Simons and Carlos Smith, came on as substitutes on Sunday and that should give them more selection options up front.
Town's failure to beat Boulevard cost them the top spot in the standings as they were replaced by the defending league champions, Vasco, who remain the only unbeaten team in league play.
After tonight's games the action switches to Southampton Oval on Saturday for a double-header starting at 12.30.
