Pan Am places at stake in Florida

after undergoing a `face-lift', with several new faces added to the squad that qualified for the Pan Am Games in Jamaica in early December.

Absent are the members of the `Miami Seven' -- Tokia Russell, Herbie Dillas, Shawn Riley, Kevin Jennings, Donnie Charles, Keishon Smith and Meshach Wade -- all still awaiting trial on drug charges in Miami.

But despite the loss of those key players -- four of them were starters in Jamaica -- coach Mark Trott was optimistic as to how his charges would fare in the quadrangular tournament also featuring two United States squads -- the Pan American Games team and Under-21 team -- as well as German outfit Bayern Leverkusun.

"I'm looking to hopefully blend the new faces with the previous members,'' said coach Trott who will venture overseas for the first time as coach of the team without the recently fired Technical Director Burkhard Ziese to call on.

Former National team coach Gary Darrell will be Trott's assistant.

Since taking over for the trip to Germany, Trott has boasted an unbeaten record. Another tough challenge is awaiting him in Florida next week, though the inclusion of the likes of Kentoine Jennings, Shawn Smith, Karl Roberts and Dean Bailey will certainly boost the team defensively.

"Fortunately there are four senior players that bring not only talent, but knowledge and experience in the game,'' the coach stated.

"Shawn Smith, Kentoine (Jennings), Karl Roberts and Troy Hall, those four in particular, I'm looking to for leadership. Troy, Kentoine and Karl all played against the US in March when they were here.'' The squad of 18 announced last night includes goalkeepers Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, the captain, Timmy Figureido and Troy Hall, Andre Rahman, Kwame Tucker, Dano Outerbridge, Ottis Steede, Shawn Simons and Raynel Lightbourne and Nakia Smith. The three college students included are Somerset's Sean Simmons, Kimande Binns of North Village and Southampton's Janeiro Tucker.

"Streaker was in the World Cup team and knows what it takes and will be the captain,'' said Trott.

"I can't be overzealous and go into every match looking to come out victorious, but in the same manner, we're not looking to lose either.

"Training has been excellent and the morale of the players is fantastic.

Attendance has also been great, with only during the time of (Bermuda Regiment) boot camp there being a few absent.'' Added Trott: "We're in a rebuilding stage, definitely, aand this is a definite chance for each player to show that they deserve a spot in the 18 that will go to Argentina.'' Tour party: Dwayne Adams (BAA), Timmy Figureido, Karl Roberts, Kentoine Jennings (All Vasco), Troy Hall, Dean Bailey (St. George's), Andrew Rahman, Kwame Tucker, Sean Simmons (Somerset), Nakia Smith, Kimande Binns (North Village), Dano Outerbridge, Shawn Simons, Ottis Steede, Raynel Lightbourne (PHC), Janeiro Tucker (Southampton), Shawn Smith (Dev. Cougars), Ascento Russell. Officials -- Mark Trott (coach), Gary Darrell (advisor), Delroy O'Brien (head of delegation), Irving Simmons (physio), Lynn Lambert (equipment manager).
