Patton itching for Etchells glory

starting next week when he takes part in the 1995 Etchells World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Patton, who left on Tuesday, will be involved in his eighth such event when the regatta gets underway on Tuesday, January 10.

Numbers are down this year, with no American skippers entered, as most of the `top guns' are involved in the America's Cup and have opted to stay at home, with the elimination series commencing later this month in San Diego.

Still the event is expected to be a highly-charged and competitive one, with over 50 boats entered and having competitors from places such Hong Kong, England, Canada and host Australia.

Soon to join the Bermudian as crew is Patton's wife Christine along with Tim Lynch, an American.

Many in local sailing circles will recognise Lynch, as he last year captured first place honours among the Etchells fleet during International Race Week.

Ironically, his triumph came at the expense of Patton who was beaten by a scant one-and-a-half points.

Patton's best finish in the Etchells Worlds came in 1988 when the Bermudian was fourth while Sydney hosted.

Wife Christine said that her husband was "hoping for big things'' this year and at the very least an improvement from two years ago when he placed 25th out of 82 boats in Brisbane.

"We certainly will have a good time,'' said Christine. "He's looking to get into the top third.

"And he promised that he will be the first Bermuda boat.'' The trio will take part in a leased craft as will the other overseas entrants.
