Pressure mounts for chasing trio

return to the Premier Division tomorrow where leaders St. George's are expected to hold on to their two-point lead.

St. George's, who spoiled Western Stars' hopes of a five-trophy sweep last weekend by beating them in the Knockout Cup, travel to Devonshire Rec. field to face unpredictable Flatts while second-placed Stars are at home to Somerset Bridge.

With both St. George's and Stars expected to pick up wins the top two places in the standings should remain unchanged. However, the next three teams, Bailey's Bay, Southampton and Cleveland with 12 points, all face tougher matches.

Bay, who have lost their last two matches, travel away to meet Willow Cuts in a match they cannot afford to lose if they intend to stay in the title race.

Willow Cuts were the surprise team of last season when they finished runner-up to champions Western Stars. This season they have slumped to the bottom half of the standings, having won just four of their eight matches in the league.

Southampton have shown every intention of making a strong run for the championship and after last weekend's impressive win over knockout champions Bay it may be time to take them seriously in both competitions.

Rangers are one of three teams on 12 points and if they can get by Police tomorrow they will at least remain four points behind St. George's.

If Rangers are this season's surprise team then Police must be the most disappointing, having won just three of their eight matches in the league.

They threw away a good opportunity to beat Stars in their last outing after dismissing their opponents for 175. In the 16-team league Police are 12th with the chance of qualifying for next year's Camel Cup slipping fast.

Cleveland and Devonshire, fifth and sixth in the standings, will clash at Sea Breeze Oval in one of the day's most promising encounters. However, Cleveland will have to improve considerably on last weekend's performance at Lord's when they were hammered by St. David's who appear to have broken out of their early-season slump.

The islanders, who have climbed up to ninth in the standings, are at home to Somerset who are level with them on points.

In other matches, Hamilton Parish host Social Club at Wellington Oval and PHC take on Warwick at White Hill field in a clash of the lowly teams.

Graham Fox has been confirmed as captain of the St. George's Cup Match team for next week's classic.

Fox was confirmed to the post on Thursday night by the selection committee and will take over from the injured Wendell Smith who pulled out of Cup Match last week.

Left-hand batsman Fox has led the league team to an unbeaten eight-match run, all but one in the absence of Smith.
