Problems mount for St. George's
After a week of internal problems, St.George's suffered yet another blow with this 4-0 defeat at Lord's yesterday.
Rattled by infighting after a dispute involving veteran goalkeeper Gregory Smith -- reportedly suspended for six months following an incident at the club -- and the threat that several players would not turn out for this game were he not picked, the kick-off approached under a cloud of uncertainty.
At one point, there was some doubt whether the game would even be played.
Reportedly against the wishes of some club members, Smith did play. But not even his experience in goal could prevent Boulevard from taking a decisive edge from the start.
With Dwight (Payback) Warren spearheading their attack, Boulevard stood supreme and deserved the win. Their goals came from Rodney Bascome (2), Neil Robinson and Warren.
Bascome, who missed a sitter after four minutes, made amends later with two goals by the half. He made it 1-0 after 19 minutes when he headed in a Vernon Eve cross, then finished with similar precision when Warren lobbed into the middle.
Despite Bolevard's dominance, St.George's had their chances but Clay Smith and Neil Paynter both put shots wide, the latter also causing Ed Oliver to make a brilliant save from his left-footed blast from 19 yards just minutes before the half.
Boulevard lifted the tempo in the second half and blew their opponents away.
Robinson and Warren gave them a 4-0 lead after 61 minutes, and once Neil Paynter had been sent off for using offensive language after 74 minutes, St.
George's had no hope of fighting back.
