Ref subbed and then subbed again!

appointed to the First Division soccer match between North Village and BAA at Bernard Park on Sunday.

For twice there had to be a switch of referees.

Illness brought about the first change before the start of the match and then at half-time injury made another substitution necessary.

Assigned referee Rex Osborne felt unwell from a 'flu bug just before the start and Cal Simons, who was pencilled in as a linesman, was called on to take the whistle with Osborne accompanying Orel Swan as a linesman.

But the musical chairs continued as a second switch became necessary midway through the game.

Simons, who was to have refereed the Second Division game between Wolves and Prospect at Devonshire Rec., which was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch and then travel to Bernard Park to run the line, started to feel the effects of a slight hamstring pull which he suffered the day before.

But the game had to go on and it did, this time with Swan taking over in the middle.

"I could have finished the game but it would have irritated it further,'' said Simons. "I didn't even go there with the intention of refereeing. I was scheduled to do the line.'' The game ended 3-2 in Village's favour, a result that left BAA three points adrift at the bottom of the standings.
