Riders begin medal quest
Championships in Uruguay tomorrow.
Geri Mewett and national time trial champion Kris Hedges will compete in the men's 40-kilometre time trial, while CD&P Grand Prix champion Melanie Claude and Julia Hawley will represent the Island in the women's event over 18 kilometres.
Speaking from the team's hotel in Montevideo, manager Vance Stevens said the course was fairly flat with only one hill of note, which rose 37 metres over about half a kilometre -- and that would suit his riders.
"I think we have as good a chance as anyone,'' added Stevens. "There is some decent competition here and a lot of unknowns.
"I think the time trial will be a good warm-up for our riders, but our main focus will be the road race on Sunday, when we will be looking to get a medal and an Olympic place.'' To earn the Island a place in the cycling event next year at the Sydney Games, Claude or Hawley would have to place in the top five in the women's event, while the men's team of Mike Lee, Steve Sterritt and Steve Millington, plus Hedges and Mewett, would have to get a rider in the top seven finishers.
