Short-handed BAA pick up crucial win

BAA's players and fans will have Wslept a little easier last night after they battled back with 10 men to snatch both points at BAA Field and ease their relegation worries.

Now, depending on how the results go this weekend, BAA could find themselves just a point behind one or two teams tomorrow evening.

The win seemed unlikely after they had their lead cancelled by St. George's in the 71st minute.

However they kept battling on and were rewarded for sheer determination 10 minutes from the end when Dennis Davis scored the winner to shatter the St.

George's hopes of moving into third place.

This match was wide open from the start as both teams knew the predicament they could be in by the end of the 90 minutes.

St. George's went into the match without the injured Dean Minors (Hamstring) and Jerome Laws partnered Clay Smith in attack.

Smith had a couple of first half chances from freekick, the first in the 19th minute which he put over the bar from 25 yards and the second, a better effort, which went just wide of Dwayne Adams' left-hand post.

It was BAA who took the lead in the 34th minute when Dennis Davis crossed from the left and Andre Thompson at the far post headed past 'keeper Troy Hall.

Anxiety and frustration set in on St. George's after that as BAA continued to play positively. In fact they should have made it 2-0 just three minutes after taking the lead, this time when a cross inside the box by Tito Smith saw Davis lift his shot over the bar from a good position.

BAA suffered a setback just four minutes into the second half when defender Treadwell Walker was sent off for a second bookable foul, having been booked in the first half for fouling. It was the first sending off of the season for referee Stuart Crockwell.

From the resulting freekick Herbie Bascome's fierce shot brought off a magnificent save from the acrobatic Adams. St. George's enjoyed a good period of pressure after that as their confidence grew.

The constant St. George's pressure finally paid off in the 71st minute when a move through the middle saw Bascome thread the pass forward for Laws who coolly slid the ball into the bottom corner past Adams.

St. George's continued to dominate and it looked like they could produce a late winner. However, it was BAA who found the net a second time 10 minutes from the end when Mark DeMoura's freekick from 25 yards came back off the underside of the crossbar and Dennis Davis was quick to score from the rebound.

Two BAA players were booked late in the match, Tito Smith for a foul and sub Wayne DeSilva for time wasting.

Teams will continue to jostle for positions in the First Division this weekend with Somerset taking on Vasco tonight (8.00) in one of the top matches.

With a victory leaders Somerset could open a two-point lead over Dandy Town who entertain North Village tomorrow at St. John's field in what should be another interesting match-up.

Other matches tomorrow see PHC taking on Boulevard in a match that could go either way while Devonshire Cougars will be looking to stretch their unbeaten streak to six games -- which would be the longest by any team this season -- when they take on neighbours Devonshire Colts at the Den.

In the Second Division Southampton Rangers host second-placed Somerset Eagles in the top clash while the 1.00 match at Southampton Oval will be between Paget and Wolves. At Wellington Oval, Hamilton meet Port Royal while the remaining match is between Social Club and St. David's at PHC Stadium.
