Sims and Duncombe wrap up victory

the overall boys and girls champions at the 22nd Atlantic Junior Golf Championships which ended yesterday at Belmont.

But while Duncombe's finishing round of 73, for a 72-hole total of 300, enabled her to eclipse the 18-year-old girls record by one shot, Sims missed out on the boys' mark by one shot after a disappointing double bogey on the last hole.

Sims shot his highest round of the four days -- a 77 -- which gave him an overall total of 287 and put him eight shots ahead of first round leader Robert Spurling.

Duncombe, playing in the 15-17 age group, was 34 shots ahead of the second best score of 334 turned in by Sarah Thomson in the 18-21 age group.

The other divisions were very close with play-offs needed to decide the champions in the boys' 10-and-under and 11-12 age groups.

Chris Tsavoussis, who made a hole-in-one on Thursday at Southampton Princess, made par on the first hole of sudden death to defeat Tyler Marshall of Bermuda in the 10-and-under.

It was also Bermuda versus the Bahamas in the 11-12 division where local Jarryd Dillas won in a play-off with Thomas Bethel after Bethel's tee shot struck a tree and could not be found.

In another close tussle, Aaron James hung on to win by two shots over first day leader Fraser Hunt as both boys played well in their tune-up for next week's Junior World Championships in San Diego.

In the 15-17 group, Keno Turnquest of the Bahamas fired a pressure-filled round of 75 to win by three shots from joint third round leader Ryan Mello.
