Sizzling start for Bromby

Cup at Savannah, Georgia, yesterday and came away with three solid victories in the opening round-robin action.

Bromby -- sounding drained after a day where temperatures hit the 100-degree mark -- was especially pleased with the "big upset'' he and his crew sewed up over the third-seeded Americans during their final race of the day. That victory came immediately following a tough loss to the US Virgin Islands and old nemesis Peter Holmberg.

Bermuda -- seeded fourth -- got off to a good start after recovering from a penalty before defeating Mexico in the first race. The crew then picked up momentum by beating the Netherland Antilles in the second race.

Things went from bad to worse against the US Virgin Islands in the third race when "we got a penalty and never really recovered,'' said Bromby.

The Bermuda squad will square off against Canada (2-2 after yesterday) and Barbados (0-4) early today before the beginning of second round robin action.

Representing Bermuda in the women's section are Paula Lewin, Leatrice Roman, Susan Gardiner and Peda Lewin. The women were unable to race yesterday when the breeze stilled late in the day.

Racing in the J24s with Bromby are Lee White, Christine Campbell and Dennis Correia. "They did a great job,'' said Bromby. "We're quite happy with the way things shaped up.'' The US Virgin Islands finished the day with a 4-0 record, while the US and Bermuda are tied with 3-1 records.

The competition's top two teams will qualify for finals in Holland next month.
