Sousa smashes butterfly record
the BASA pool on Saturday.
Jessica Sousa, swimming for Dolphins, broke the 50-metre butterfly mark for 13-14 year-old girls, set eight years ago by Janice Maughan.
Sousa, 14, raced to a time of 33.01 seconds to win the race by 1.63 seconds over second-placed Jennifer Young. Sousa also won the open girls 100m backstroke.
Other highlights included Ronald Cowen meeting the qualifying time for the upcoming CCCAN meet in Cuba and the return of Stephen Fahy from Yale University.
Cowen, 16, became the 11th swimmer to meet the tough qualifying standards for Cuba when he clocked 4:28.78 in the open boys 400m freestyle, nearly 14 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger, Jimmy Pereira.
Fahy, who narrowly missed qualifying for last year's Olympics, returned to the Island and posted a time of 1:59.13 in the 200m free. Fahy, who also won the 200m IM and 50m 'fly, has already qualified for Cuba.
Cowen also won three races on the day, taking the 100m backstroke and 100m free.
The meet was an open competition, meaning all ages competed in each race.
Final placings were therefore not as important as an individual's form and times. The third and final portion of the Spring Series is on May 31, an age-group meet.
