Hubbard was wearing a uniform specially designed for him by an American company approached by coach Greg Hopkins. And its intricate design depicting Bermudian themes caught the imagination of the Games public.

Now it has been adopted by the newly-formed national cycling squad and is set to get its first outing on the Island at the Bermuda Grand Prix on May 7.

Hopkins said: "The reaction in Atlanta was so positive, we've had it adopted as the national jersey and have had to register it with the world governing body.'' The Bank of Bermuda sponsored the creation of the strips for the 20-strong squad.

Hopkins added: "I approached them and they jumped on board straight away. I was taken aback. "I had originally spoken to this company in the States and asked if they'd be interested in designing a uniform for the Olympics and was very surprised when they said they'd do it.
