ROAD RUNNING RUN Teen sensation Tyler Butterfield and Lynn Patchett were the first male and female across the line, but it was Steve Donnelly and Glennis Benjamin who came away with the top honours during Tuesday night's annual BF&M Weight Handicap 5K in St. George's.

The popular end-of-season event is determined by dividing all of the runners' time in seconds by their weight in pounds.

And that meant that even though 200-lb policeman Donnelly trailed 15-year-old Butterfield by just over a minute and a half, he emerged with the top weight/time ratio of 5.41 to successfully defend his title. Second was 240-pound Mark Casey who ran a respectable 24:14 (5.75 ratio) while Jay Ryan, at 217 lbs, was clocked in 20:57 for third place (5.79).

The overall women's event was much closer with Benjamin finishing with a weight/time ratio of 9.06 compared to second-placed Jeanne Meunier's 9.07.

Benjamin clocked 21:35.

Jane Christie, third woman across the line, was also third overall, clocking 19:33 (9.38).

Patchett led the women home in 18:55 followed by Anna Eatherley in 19:20.

Butterfield, recent winner of a top triathlon in Canada, recorded a blistering 16:25 over what is considered one of the Island's toughest 5K courses. David Dunwoody followed in 16:49 with Brett Forgesson third in 16:53.

TENNIS TEN A record entry of 36 boys and 21 girls began play in the Colonial Open Junior tournament at Pomander Gate.

Some key players are missing from this tournament as they are participating in various events in the United States. Tara and Crystal Lambert are training and playing in Florida which leaves the door open for Zara DeSilva in the 16-and-under and 18-and-under events.

Jovan Whitter and Kareem Sharrieff are missing from the boys 14-and-under which leaves John Wardman as the top seed in the event. Gavin Manders -- boys 12-and-under -- is also competing abroad.
