St. George's seek revenge against Bay

Bailey's Bay in tomorrow's Knockout Cup final at Lord's, starting at noon.

By reaching this far in the competition, though, the east enders have already made amends for their disappointing first round exit a year ago when they were tumbled out by Willow Cuts at the Royal Naval field. But whether or not they have the mettle to go all the way against the champions in this match-up remains to be seen.

As they enter this match St. George's must be wondering if Bay have their number because in three clashes between the two sides this season it has been the boys from Sea Breeze Oval who have emerged victorious.

Bay first took honours in the Camel Cup final in May after Clarkie Trott snatched eight wickets for just seven runs and this sensational victory was followed up by another win over the east enders in a Cup match trial for the Cal Wade Memorial Trophy.

Then Bay removed St. George's from contention in the race for the Premier League title with a whopping eight-wicket defeat with Noel Gibbons this time spearheading their bowling attack with figures of six for 48. Both Trott and Gibbons are expected to be in Bay's team for tomorrow's match as the defending champions go in as firm favourites.

While Bay's record looks astonishingly impressive, skipper Ricky Hill is fully aware that his team is not invincible and realises that they have to put the previous match-ups behind them and prepare to fight it out against formidable opponents.

The fact that Noel Gibbons is home from England to strengthen their line-up Bay does help a lot, but Hill knows that it still will not be easy for his team.

The skipper is holding his cards close to his chest, claiming that he will not know what team he will chose until the conclusion of today's Eastern Counties Cup semi-final at Sea Breeze Oval.

"We are capable of fielding a strong team whoever we decide to use because we have so many good players, I guess a lot will depend on who performs well against Cleveland,'' said Hill.

"The fact that we have beaten St. George's twice in major competitions and a third time in the Cal Wade Memorial game doesn't mean a thing. They have always been very competitive against us and we all expect nothing less than a good fight from them once again,'' added the Bailey's Bay skipper.

Momentum though is expected to be high in the St. George's team since they are coming off a resounding 153-run victory over a competent Southampton Rangers team in last Sunday's semi-final at Devonshire Rec. -- a victory that was spearheaded by solid performances from young fast bowler Ryan Steede, spinner David Adams and batsman and former skipper Wendell Smith.

Steede picked up six wickets for 39 runs and Adams had four for just two while Wendell Smith hammered 92 runs.

But in order to have a good chance against Bay, St. George's must get healthy batting contributions this time from Clay Smith and Dexter Smith high up in the order alaongwith captain Graham Fox, Wade and Ricky Hodsoll. Dexter plays his final game before flying to east Africa to marry his Ugandan fiance Beatrice shortly.
