Super subs halt Village cruise
Super subs Wayne Henry and Marvin Belboda combined to sink a North Village team who had been cruising through the first hour of their Friendship Trophy semi-final at Somerset Cricket Club last night.
Henry and Belboda came on as twin replacements for Ricky Saltus and Clevon Hill after 52 minutes with Village leading by Dwight Warren's first half goal.
Belboda's willingness to run at the Village defence, which had hitherto been relatively untroubled, upset the league leaders.
Just five minutes after coming on Belboda almost slipped Jahmah Samuels in for the equaliser but his ball was just too long.
Three minutes later he twisted and turned in the penalty area before his shot was scrambled for a corner. Then captain Shannon Burgess got in on the act, turning the ball from right to left foot and sending in a thunderous low shot which Gladwin Edness parried wide.
Then Belboda almost parted the centre of the Village defence again, first getting the better of Kentoine Jennings, then seeing the Bermuda defender rob him as he lined up his shot, before getting the ball back again and watching his effort turned for a corner.
It looked as if something would finally have to give and this was recognised by Village coach Kenny Thompson who sent on the experienced Elliott Jennings to try to hold onto the ball up front and give his rearguard some respite.
But the equaliser came in the most bizarre of circumstances as Henry ran across to take a corner on the right, flighted it into the near post and watched in delight as Edness punched it into his own net.
Ironically, it was a goalkeeping error that had gifted Village the lead in the 23rd minute. Troy Hall allowed a cross to slip through his fingers and Dwight Warren was on hand to notch his sixth goal in three matches.
Village had plenty of opportunities to increase their lead in a first half in which they were dominant and then Warren went close to making it 2-0 in the 53rd minute but his flicked header skirted across the six yard area and to safety.
The Village players were left cursing their wastefulness when Alzame Zuill buried the winner five minutes after Henry had put Colts on level terms.
It was Belboda's ball, again, that created it, leaving Zuill with an unhindered run in on goal and he despatched the chance with consumate ease to put the holders through.
