Telecom short-circuited
St. Francis Xavier picked up their first tour victory on Tuesday night when they hammered reigning local League and FA Cup champions BAA Telecom 4-1.
St. Francis started and ended in a flurry as they attacked at will, pinning the home team in their own half and not allowing them any rest.
Not even the addition of four guest players could halt the carnage as BAA incurred its first loss against foreign opposition.
The first 10 minutes saw St. Francis applying much pressure, yet it was BAA scoring first, taking advantage of a rare counter-attack in the 15th minute, with Ann Marie Ivanoff applying the finishing touches to a move started by guest player Keona Saunders.
Saunders, who played in the first match of the three-game tour as a member of the Bermuda Select, streaked down the right side untouched and supplied the perfect cross to Ivanoff, who stroked the ball home past goalkeeper Tanya Pelly.
However, the advantage was shortlived, with St. Francis striking back two minutes later through Patricia MacDougall.
MacDougall, an Atlantic University Athletic Association All-Star, beat her marker and sent in a right-foot scorcher straight at stand-in 'keeper Antoinette Williams.
Williams, though, failed to hold onto the ball merely pushing it into the roof of the net.
BAA soon began to buckle, mostly do to a lack of organisation.
Still they almost reclaimed the lead in the 30th minute when Tracy McPhee outstripped the defence to get to a long ball from midfield, but a shot that appeared destined for the back of the net brought out a stunning save by Pelly.
Two near misses in the 37th and 38th minute followed for St. Francis, but there would be no denying them at the stroke of half-time as Leisa McIntosh's in-swinging kick from just outside the penalty area found pay-dirt.
A similar scenario evolved in the second half and it was no surprise when the lead was increased in the 60th minute.
Niki Tobin started and finished the manoeuvre to put her side up 3-1.
Rounding out the scoring was Erin Keating in the 67th minute who hammered a right foot effort by Williams, who despite allowing four goals, was named player of the game for BAA.
Leanne MacDonald was named player of the game for St. Francis.
The visitors last match takes place tonight at BAA with a Bermuda Student Select supplying the opposition.
