Trio poised for debut against Jamaicans

Bermuda are expected to give international debuts to three players when they take on Jamaica in the final preliminary round match of the Red Stripe Bowl today in Alpart, St. Elizabeth.

Gregg Foggo will definitely replace fast bowler Roger Blades while coach Allan Douglas is leaning towards getting Irving Romaine and Cleon Scotland into the fray.

A final decision was to be made after the team's three-hour journey from the capital to Mandeville where they will spend two nights before returning for Saturday's quarter-final at Melbourne Cricket Club.

Possibilities being tossed around are Romaine to replace Donald Norford as wicketkeeper while Scotland, who has been ruled fit to play after suffering a left ankle injury against Windward Islands, could come in for either Anthony Amory or Dexter Basden.

Bermuda are bound to come up against a fiery Jamaican pace attack which includes Test captain Courtney Walsh, Franklyn Rose and former Test star Patrick Patterson, in the midst of somewhat of a rebirth.

Toss in the effective Laurie Williams and you will have the closest thing to a four-pronged pace attack on any team in this competition.

Jamaica defeated champions Trinidad and Tobago in their last match but did not come away with full marks after a second indifferent batting performance.

No doubt, against Bermuda's friendly attack, they will want to get their batsmen in the flow over the next two matches. A Jamaica victory would secure the top qualifying spot for them, assuming Trinidad and Tobago are not upset by the Windwards, meaning that Bermuda will be their quarter-final foes.

So this makes today's affair every much a dress rehearsal for the knockout stage of the competition.

Jimmy Adams has missed the first two Jamaican matches with injury and they are hoping to insert him into a frail middle-order which has offered no resistance when previously they were 72-5 from 15 overs against the Windwards when the match was abandoned and 85-7 after being earlier placed at 50-2 chasing a meagre total of 84 on a good batting track.

Roger Blades has been the only Bermuda bowler who has looked likely to penetrate opposing batsmen here and with him being rested for the quarter-finals, the odds of another 300-plus total to chase are shortened significantly.

Probable Bermuda team: Arnold Manders (capt), Albert Steede, Clay Smith, Dexter Basden, Anthony Amory, Janeiro Tucker, Irving Romaine, Lionel Cann, Del Hollis, Gregg Foggo, Herbie Bascome.
