Trojans make Town pay for missed chances
It was party time at the West End on Saturday night, especially for the young Trojans who danced into the night following a thrilling upset of then First Division leaders Dandy Town.
But it was a party which Town had threatened to severely dampen earlier on.
While the home side and their fans celebrated the final outcome, the visitors will have left kicking themselves after thoroughly dominating for the most part -- a surprising lack of finishing power responsible for their downfall.
On a night when front men Darron (Duke) Simons, the division's second leading scorer with nine goals, and last season's Most Valuable Player Carlos Smith simply could not find the net despite numerous opportunities, there was no one else to step forward and turn the tide.
Instead Somerset survived an unending barrage of second half pressure, stoutly clinging to a single goal advantage provided courtesy of Town goalkeeper Cymande Davis, whose blunder made Trojan forward Curtis Grant a hero.
It was Davis in the eighth minute who failed to hold onto a right-wing cross from Duval Binns, and let the ball slip through his palms. It fell kindly for Grant who graciously nodded home from barely a yard out.
From then on the script changed in favour of the visitors, who moved forward at will, pinning Somerset in defence as the tag-team of Simons and Smith began to seize the upper hand on their defensive counterparts.
Twice, in the 17th and 22nd minutes, Andre Hendrickson found himself confronted with the threat of Simons and Smith charging at his goal, and on both occasions won the battle.
This pattern would be repeated throughout the 90 minutes.
Yet it was not all one-way traffic, with Somerset able to create some meaningful attacks themselves, mostly on quick counter moves, and most involving Rodney Bascome.
Returning to the starting line-up after being benched for the last few matches, Bascome toiled hard as often the lone striker, using his unorthodox body and ball fakes to create room to work.
Bascome set up team-mate Randy Simmons for what should have been a sure goal in the 68th minute, gaining possession on the left before slipping the ball to an open Simmons in the middle. But Simmons could only place his effort wide from 16 yards.
Town continued to commit men forward as Somerset fought resiliently for their survival.
Their charmed existence would last until the end, with Musson missing a final chance for the equaliser miskicking in front off an open net as time ticked away.
The loss dropped Dandy Town (nine points) out of first place, leaving Somerset first (10 points), where they remain after Cougars suprise win over North Village yesterday.
