Trojans move to top

Somerset Trojans moved to the top of the Coca Cola First Division standings last night with this slim win over the Zebras which gave them seven points from three matches.

However, the top spot is likely to change hands at least two more times this weekend as Vasco take on Hotels tonight and then Devonshire Colts meet North Village tomorrow.

However, the leadership will be sweet for Somerset, however brief, as they only returned to the First Division this season after their first ever season in the Second Division.

Donnie Simmons, stand-in coach in the absence of Randy Horton, has managed to preserve the team's early unbeaten record.

Last night's winner came in the first half through Marco Butterfield after 14 minutes when goalkeeper Jason Robinson was blown down for too many steps on the left corner of the penalty area.

The ball was blasted low towards the far post and before PHC could clear Butterfield poked the ball home from close range.

PHC had their best chance in the first half to equalise four minutes when Quincy Hunt was fed a perfect ball on the right side. He ran into the box and then lifted his shot over the bar.

The Trojans had a chance in the second half to go 2-0 up when Frankie Simmons fed Michael Brangman on the left side but he shot straight at 'keeper Robinson who had narrowed the angle at the near post.

After that the game opened up as PHC began to penetrate more as both teams relied on quick breaks. Striker Kenny Mills opened the Somerset defence with a good run down the right and he set up Albert Thomas with his cross which the substitute side-footed over the bar from a good position.

PHC kept on the pressure in the late in the game as they brought on Dana Rawlins for Hunt and then replaced McLee Smith with Jevonne Sealey.

The Zebras thought they had gotten their lucky break in the 80th minute when Somerset 'keeper Winslow Williams was blown down for taking too long to release the ball. But PHC captain Ricky Mallory put his low freekick from near the edge of the box low and just past Williams' right-hand post.
