Trojans put Wolves to the sword
A casual observer might have thought Somerset had won something more significant than a mere league win if he had witnessed their victory celebrations last night.
For fists punched the air, backs were slapped and whoops of joy resounded around Devonshire Rec after the Trojans, with just one point from their previous four matches, tamed the high-flying Wolves.
Two penalties, one in each half, were enough to secure the points for the team who at the start of play found themselves second bottom of the league.
A tremendous first period paved the way for the victory, but Wolves fought hard after the break equalising before being caught on the counter later on.
Within three minutes Trojans made clear their intent, Dwight Basden and Rodney Bascome combining to catch Wolves' defence flat-footed.
When play switched to the other end, Timmy Figuerido found Diallo Sharrieff's free-kick too hot to handle, but he did enough to force Shaki Crockwell to put the rebound wide.
Basden fired over after a fine shot on the turn and then minutes later forced Corby Durrant to save his long range effort at the second attempt.
Figuerido had to be alive to Adam Outerbridge's cheeky backheel in the box after 25 minutes, then it was Basden's turn in the spotlight again, hitting a rising shot over the Wolves bar.
Referee Stuart Crockwell had a hand in the opener -- awarding a penalty to Somerset in the 32nd minute after adjudging Sharrieff to have handballed.
Bascome made no mistake from the spot.
The goal galvanised the Trojans and they monopolised play until the break.
But if they thought that was game over, they were mistaken.
Wolves came out fired up, pinning the Trojans in their own half for the first 10 minutes.
Crockwell's shot was deflected wide after an excellent run to the byline by Mark Ray, Sharrieff headed straight at Figuerido and then Jermaine Douglas hit a long distance effort into the keeper's midriff.
Somerset forced three corners in the space of a minute when they finally broke free of the shackles, but Wolves were not done.
A long throw by man-mountain Sharrieff caused confusion in the box in the 70th minute and when the ball fell to substitute Chae Simmons he made no mistake, firing low and hard past the despairing dive of the otherwise immaculate, David Burchall on the line.
It was backs to the wall from here on in for the Trojans, but just as it looked as if they might be about to lose the points under a torrent of Wolves' attacks, they got a break.
A rare sortee upfield led to a needless tackle on Basden on the edge of the box and Crockwell pointed to the spot.
If Bascome felt the pressure, he didn't show it, stroking the ball into the left hand side of the net for the winner.
