Vallis beats the weather

A story in Saturday's Sport section incorrectly stated that golfer Michael Darling Jr. was American. He is Bermudian.

Robert Vallis and Jack White hung onto their lead in appalling conditions at the Mid Ocean Club yesterday to win the Founder's Trophy for the second time.

A round of net 70 in wind and driving rain was enough for Bermuda's Vallis and American White to repeat their victory of two years ago.

Their 72-hole total of 260 was two strokes better than closest rivals Kirk Kitson and Tony Lee and eight shots better than third-placed Blake Marshall and Jeff Eidson.

Vallis said: "I thought it was bordering on the unplayable at times. When we started out, there were high winds.

"The balls were blowing all over the greens and it was very tough to putt.

The rain was not really a problem, it was the strong wind that came with it.'' And Vallis paid tribute to his partner: "Our victory was a team effort, but I have to strongly thank my partner. He was the one who pulled us back after we lost a few putts early on.'' Both players made a stuttering start and Vallis admitted that a string of missed three- and four-foot putts had cost them any chance of victory in the gross division.

But they found their form as the round progressed and picked up gross birdies on the eighth and 13th holes to complete the equal third-best round of the day.

Vallis and White had started the final day with a two-stroke lead over the field in the gross division, but they were overhauled by American duo Michael Darling and John Pickett, whose three-over-par 74 completed their 72-hole total of 284.
