Wainwright leads Rangers run feast
Devonshire 36 Keith Wainwright stroked the fourth-highest score of the season -- 131 -- as Southampton Rangers ran riot against the Devonshire Rec. bowlers at Southampton Oval.
After losing opening partner Kwame Tucker when the score was 20, Wainwright added 109 for the second wicket with Janeiro Tucker on his way to his first century of the season. By the time he was fourth out on 238, Wainwright had smashed 19 fours and three sixes to keep Rangers in sight of the 300 mark.
Also getting among the runs for Rangers were player-coach Clevie Wade with 40, Janeiro Tucker 38 and Ryan Belboda 30 not out late in the innings.
Victory out of their reach, Devonshire struggled to post even a modest total as Garry Williams and Carl Garzette, in his first match of the season, struck early and never let up.
Williams and Garzette formed a two-man demolition team, with Williams claiming five for 18 from 10 overs and Garzette four for 16 off eight as Rec. were dismissed in just 19 overs. Ryan Belboda was the other bowler used, sending down one over.
Lyle Millett, batting at number nine, was the only Devonshire batsman in double figures, hitting 13 not out.
Somerset 240 Somerset Bridge 127 Leon Place added 85 not out to his 72 the day before, as Somerset beat Somerset Bridge by 113 runs in their west end derby at White Hill Field.
Place came to the wicket at 6-1 after the early loss of Tony Cheeseman. And he stayed there to the end as Somerset posted their winning total. Craig Brangman scored 34 while Shane Hollis added 24 valuable runs in the tailend after Bridge had them to 165-7 before a stand of 68 with Place took them past 200.
Denzil Dill, Corvett Lambert and David Jones all claimed two wickets for Bridge.
Jones was the top bat for them with 22 while Dill added 19 in the tailend.
Tony Cheeseman claimed four for 21 off nine overs and David Gibbs two for 25 in seven.
St. David's 279-8 Warwick 82 Even without Clay Smith's contribution with the bat, St. David's still proved too strong for Warwick at Lord's yesterday.
Smith, who gave up the captaincy for the day to vice-captain Sammy Robinson, was not even required to bat (he was pencilled in at number 11) as three teenagers carried the batting in the total of 279.
Chris Foggo enjoyed his best knock of the season when he stroked 77, including nine fours and a six after coming to the wicket at number three in the fifth over.
By the time he was trapped lbw by Reginald Pitcher in the 33rd over, St.
David's were 154-4 and well on their way to a big total.
O.J.Pitcher and Landro Minors, batting at number four and five, followed Foggo's example to push their claim for Eastern County places next month.
Pitcher stroked 40 -- three fours and a six -- as he and Foggo added 98 for the third wicket in 18 overs, before Minors carried his bat in the last 19 overs to finish not out on 50. He hit seven boundaries.
Lionel Cann, also pushed down the order to number eight, smashed 22 from three sixes while Del Hollis hit 21, Rudell Pitcher 20 and opener Allen Richardson 18.
Hoyt Zuill and Reginald Pitcher were the pick of the Warwick bowlers, Zuill finishing with four for 51 off 10 overs and Pitcher, a former St. David's spinner, taking three for 54. Allan Wilkinson was the most economical of the Warwick bowlers, giving up just 32 runs in his 10 overs.
Warwick never came close to batting out the majority of their overs as St.
David's had them in early trouble, taking the first two wickets in the second over from Cann.
And by the first ball of the 16th over the match was all over as Cann grabbed five wickets -- five for 51 -- and Del Hollis three for nine to run through the Warwick batting. Rudell Pitcher, who shared the new ball with Cann, had two for 21 off four overs.
Ritchie Foggo was top batsman for Warwick with 20 which included two sixes while Allan Jay Minors scored 11. Twenty-one extras were the main contribution in their modest total of 82.
Social Club 83 Bailey's Bay 84-1 Bailey's Bay were without top batsman and bowler Charlie Marshall and Clarkie Trott, but still proved too strong for Social Club at Sea Breeze Oval. The Premier League leaders took the opportunity to play some youngsters and still had an easy win as Dennis Pilgrim and Allan Walker both claimed three wickets to help restrict Social Club to just 83 in 27.4 overs.
Pilgrim snatched three for 28, Walker three for 10 and John Ray two for 23.
Robert Steede, with 34 including five boundaries, was the only Social Club batsman to look comfortable against the Bay bowling after they were 10-3 in just the sixth over.
Bay raced to their winning target in 16.1 overs with opener Dennis Trott scoring 46 not out and Roderick Masters 13 not out. Trott hit a six and four fours.
