Wanderers give extros a taste of the top flight
crown with a hard-earned 3-0 victory at home against newly-promoted Somerset Extros on Saturday.
Extros succeeded in frustrating their fitter opponents for three-quarters of their match, but after being reduced to 10 men found the task of holding out a bit too steep.
The visitors were forced to play short when forward Stevie Riley became the season's first sending-off for violent conduct, after flooring his marker with a right hook, reminiscent of the punch British heavyweight Lennox Lewis used to dismantle Frank Bruno on Friday night.
Leading the way in the scoring department for BAA was Stephen Irvine with two goals while Richard Correia got the other.
Robin Hood, who finished second to the Wanderers last season, went down 1-0 to Spinning Wheel in a surprise result. The goal came after Allan Fray's deep cross from the right five minutes from the end saw Malcolm Moseley head into his own goal under pressure. Referee Oral Swan credited the goal to Fray.
Forties and KPMG both notched four goals to get their Group A campaign off to a good start. Forties blanked Exiles 4-0 at White Hill field, having put the match out of the reach with three goals in the first 15 minutes after some sloppy defending by Exiles who were last year's Group B winners.
Richard Bradbury led Forties' scoring with two goals while Steve Cotton and Derek Patience got one each.
John Ingham scored twice and Neil Clemens and Dave Youens one apiece as KPMG came from 1-0 down early in the first half to beat Island Rangers 4-1. Troy Berkeley opened the scoring for Rangers but by the end of the half KPMG were 3-1 in front.
Last season's two relegated Commercial Division teams, Lobster Pot and Fire Service, had mixed results in their season openers. Pot beat Park United (formerly Coca-Cola) 3-0 on goals from Tony Smith, Mike Evans and Patrick Stone.
Fire Service went down 4-0 to Devonshire Colts All-Stars for whom Larry Benjamin, Lynn Virgil, Earl Godfrey and Marvin Campbell scored.
The big winners were another new team, Valley FC, who hammered Prison Officers 11-2 with Kevin McNeil accounting for five of the goals. Roger Hall supported with a hat-trick while Kevin Isaac scored twice and Troy Simmons the other.
Lynn Hall and Clarence Lee scored for Prison Officers who, despite fielding only seven men, took the lead twice.
Genesis, also new to the Commercial Division, scored a late goal at Wellington Oval to beat St. George's All-Stars 1-0.
A total of 39 goals were scored in the Alliance Division with Southampton Rangers the big winners in Group B, blasting BAA 10-0 as Dmari Hart was in good form with four goals while Erskine Brangman netted three times. Jamal Stevens (two) and Gregory Steede were the other scorers for Rangers.
The other two matches in the group were also shut-outs with Boulevard beating Somerset Eagles 4-0 and Devonshire Cougars defeating Prospect 3-0. Clevie Rogers (two), Abdul Smith and Amon Brown scored for Boulevard.
In Group A, defending champions Dandy Town suffered a bruising 7-1 defeat at the hands of North Village. Tillman Darrell scored a hat-trick while Sean Dill netted twice and Kacy Simons and Tito Smith one each for Village. Darren Simons replied for Town.
PHC travelled to Frog Lane and came out 6-2 winners over Devonshire Colts thanks to goals from Ottis Steede (two), Dean O'Brien, Michael Trott, Dwayne Simons and Mark Smith. Phillion Webb and Raymond Raynor replied for Colts.
Somerset beat St. George's 4-2 in the other match after Armel Thomas and Clifton Anderson both scored twice. Del Tyrell and Marlon Outerbridge got the St. George's goals.
STEVIE RILEY -- Red card.
