in an outdoor Grand Prix meet in Moscow, Russia, on Monday night.

Wellman jumped 17.29 metres (56 feet, eight and a half inches) to finish behind home-town favourite Denis Kapustin (17.42) but ahead of long-time rival Yoelvis Quesada of Cuba (17.23).

The leap was well outside Wellman's best this year -- 17.72 metres which earned him the gold medal at the World Indoor Games in Barcelona in March -- and shy of the 17.62 which gave him first place in an outdoor meet in El Paso early last month.

However, he remains on course for a good showing at the World Outdoor Championships to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in early August which will be the highlight of the 1995 track and field season.
