Wolffe strikes twice as PHC bounce back
Winger Dave Wolffe struck twice in the second half to seal the points for the Zebras in blistering heat at PHC Stadium.
The teams were on even par after an uninspiring first half and while St.
George's coach Herbie Bascome delayed bringing on Sinclair Smith for out-of-touch Carlos Greaves, the early introduction of Randy Boyles for Raynel Lightbourne proved a decisive move for the home team.
Boyles, with Hotels last season, added noticeable punch to the Zebras attack with his willingness to take on the St. George's defence and 14 minutes after he came on the deadlock was broken with Wolffe's first goal of the season.
The goal came from a Sammy Swan corner on the right, which was earned by Boyles' persistence. And when the flighted cross was knocked about inside the penalty area without being cleared, Wolffe got the decisive final touch to steer a header past Troy Hall from close range.
PHC had looked the more fluent early in the second half as their experience began to show. St. George's were threatening on the break but the PHC defence gave them little scope around goal.
The home team lost defender Minton Gilbert on the hour with a hand injury after he was on the receiving end of an overhead kick by Neil Paynter who had pushed forward for a corner. PHC played with 10 men for a couple of minutes before Stephen Trott came on to replace Gilbert.
PHC got an insurance goal in the 75th minute when Wolffe broke through on the right and unleashed a fierce shot, which 'keeper Hall could only parry but could not prevent from going over the line. A Boyles challenge resulted in Hall ending up inside the goal but by then the goal was scored.
Moments later, Tokeia Russell's shot for PHC went just over the bar as PHC continued to press forward. Two minutes from the end, Hall denied Boyles when he blocked his shot with his legs after a pass from midfield by Kevin Dill put Boyles behind the St. George's defence on the left.
The closest either team came to scoring in the first half was when Ottis Steede's shot from the left side of the penalty area in the 27th minute brought off a good diving save from Hall.
Soon after, the 'keeper was driven out of his area by a wayward back-pass from left-back Andre Todd. Raynel Lightbourne robbed Hall but his pass into the middle was cleared by Neil Paynter.
St. George's had a good chance in the 33rd minute when a headed clearance by Paynter sent Donald Whitfield, their most threatening player up front, through on the left. But from an angle he drove the ball wide of the far post.
