Young cricket stars go on tour
players, after coach Arnold Manders followed through with his promise to take them on a tour if they won the league championship last season.
So next Monday they set off for Barbados for an 11-day tour which will involve five matches against local club sides. Included among the squad of 21 players will be three guest players -- Cleveland's Deon Stovell and Aronde Bascome and Fucre Crockwell of St. David's.
Manders will be assisted on the trip by other Western Stars officials, Andre Manders, Milford Waldron and Cecil Lewis.
Manders recalls travelling with the club at a young age and now the new crop of talented youngsters at the club will enjoy the same experience.
Ironically some of them are sons of current Western Stars players. They include Arnold's son Gavin, brother Anthony Manders' son, Jekon Edness, and Andre Manders' son Taurean. Also there is Wayne Richardson's son Jacolbi Robinson and Treadwell Gibbons' son, Treadie Lee.
"That's the time we started travelling, too, and you can see what it has done for us,'' Arnold Manders said.
The players raised most of the funds themselves through various functions while there were also some donations. One of the players, Jason Furbert, was recently injured in an accident but will still travel, though he will not play.
Others taking part are: Jekon Edness, Seion Darrell, Jason Dill, Daren Williams, Lemar Caines, Jevonie Fubler, Jerome Vohen, Nikai Albuoy, Nicoe Albuoy, Sergio Edness, Kanaz Tuzo, Kian Butterfield, P.J.Thomas, Jaime Raynor and LaRoy Jones.
Meanwhile, the under-12 league has reached its semi-final stage with West winners Willow Cuts playing Cleveland in one match and East winners St.
David's taking on Western Stars A in the other.
The matches were postponed from Saturday and the St. David's-Stars match will be played after the Stars players return from their tour.
