BCB announce new-look squad
Oronde Bascome and Dion Stovell, two of the Island's most promising opening batsmen, are among those who have been invited by Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) to train with the senior national team in preparation for this summer's busy international schedule that will see Bermuda take on the West Indies in Toronto.
Also back in the frame are seam bowlers George O'Brien jr and Jacobi Robinson as well as batsmen Chris Foggo and all-rounders OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden who were all influential in St. David's' recent Twenty20 final victory over Somerset Cricket Club.
Other new faces in the senior national set-up include batsmen Fiqre Crockwell, Jason Anderson, Nakia Smith and the hard-hitting Glenn Blakeney who is back after a four-year absence.
It is now become clear that national coach Gus Logie and the Board's selectors have left no stone unturned in search for the right combinations which they feel are best capable of revitalising a national team that has seemingly lost its way after raising a maiden Americas Division One title in Toronto nearly two years ago.
Trinidadian Logie has encouraged all those earning calls to national team duty to make the most of the opportunity to play for their country at that level.
"We have been lucky in a sense to get the opportunity for our players to be exposed to a higher level of competition. There are some players who have been involved (at senior national level) and have then been out of it for whatever reason who we want to see continue their careers. And we want to help them establish their careers once again and hopefully they will put their best foot foward."
Logie added: "We spoken to a few of the players personally who all expressed a desire of playing (with the national squad) again. We have also consulted with their coaches and received very positive reports.
"The guys are all keen to represent their country and hopefully now that we have extended a further opportunity to them, they will take it."
In budding talents Bascome and Stovell, one of only two Bermudian batsmen to score a double century in a match, Logie may have finally found a solution to Bermuda's batting woes at the top of the order.
"Oronde has been training with us over the last month and so he has a head start, while Dion now has another opportunity and we are hoping he takes full advantage," he added.
The ex-West Indies Test player is also pleased to have fiery pacer O'Brien back in the fold and PHC wicketkeeper/batsman Jason Anderson among the new additions to his squad who take on Canada in three One-Day Internationals in Toronto next month.
"George (O'Brien) has made an effort, having gone to play for Police, which I think is a very positive move," he said. "Jason has done well so far (this season) and we've seen him before and know he has some quality."
Logie's training squad of 31 players that also boasts the likes of Glamorgan skipper David Hemp and top all-rounder Janeiro Tucker, is to be shaved down to 15 early next month.
The squad will train four times weekly.
The Board also announced yesterday that specialist fielding coach Mike Young will travel to Bermuda to conduct fielding workshops at the National Sports Centre (NSC) from Wednesday, May 28 to Friday, May 30 which are open to the general public.
