Colts suffer Zuill injury blow

Shoulder injury: Devonshire Colts' Aljame Zuill

Premier Division strugglers Devonshire Colts have been rocked by the news that goal machine Aljame Zuill is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Bermuda international has been ruled out of action for at least six weeks with a shoulder injury which he picked up in Colts' defeat with North Village at the weekend.

Ray Jones' side are currently at the foot of the table with their solitary point coming in a 1-1 draw against cross-town rivals Devonshire Cougars, a game in which skipper Zuill scored the opener.

Zuill's absence compounds Colts' early season woes with Jones' men relying heavily on their star striker as their primary source of goals.

But the 32-year-old marksman has urged his team-mates to stand up and be counted as they prepare for life without him.

"I'm out for six weeks with a shoulder injury so I won't be able to pick the players up, but it's getting to the point when we need to come together and look within ourselves," he said.

"I know there will be some talk about Colts and how we will get relegated now, but anything is possible.

"We've trained hard leading up to the season, learned our system, and know what's required to get the job done every week.

"It's time for us to get together and dig deep. We can't walk around with our heads down, we have to keep going.

"I personally thought the turning point was our match against Cougars when we worked hard.

"From there we should have moved forward, but everything went downhill. Ryan (Nesbitt) got sent off against Village which slowed our momentum down."

Colts' leaky defence has already conceded 16 goals in all competitions this season and Zuill believes the club must solve their defensive deficiencies before they start worrying about his loss in attack.

He has also questioned the attitude and desire of some of his team-mates who he believes must begin to pull their weight if Colts are to repeat their Houdini act which saw them escape relegation last season.

"We used to have one of the best defences in the country, so what's happened to change this is beyond me," said Zuill.

"It's not the fact we can't score goals but that we give the opposition easier chances to score than we get. In the end that just won't cut it.

"There's is no real difference between now and last year, other than we got off to a good start last season and this time around we're looking for answers.

"It's not fair to have three or four guys in the side working their hardest, while the other six walk around sulking. In the end it's a team game and we must stick together.

"It's vital we stick together."
