Forties pad commerical lead

North Village on Sunday and helped Forties stretch their lead at the top of the Commercial Cricket League to 20 points.

WIA coasted to a five-wicket win over North Village at Warwick Secondary while Forties beat Pembroke United by seven wickets at National. Devonshire Stars avenged an earlier seven-wicket defeat by beating Sandys Sports Club by 47 runs at Garrison Field.

Olwin Clarke was the chief architect of WIA's victory over North Village, who shared the 1992 league title with Forties. WIA are now level with Village on 40 points while Forties are on 60 points with three games remaining.

Clarke (two for 49) and Randy Liverpool (two for 28) helped restrict Village to 151 for six in their 42 overs and then Clarke lifted WIA to victory with more than 10 overs to spare with three sixes and 10 fours in an unbeaten 64.

Newcomer Winston Vaughn made 32.

Village failed to build on a solid opening stand of 57 between Mike Levon (33) and Elliott Pitcher (37) but Cal Smith, who finished with four for 57, rocked WIA with three early wickets before Clarke secured victory.

Forties' opening bowler Oliver Franks (four for 22) grabbed four wickets in his first three overs, including three in the third, to reduce Pembroke United to eight for four but Michael Campbell (43) and David Gibbs (47) led a spitited fightback with a stand of 85.

James Thomas (three for 36) bowled Campbell at 93 and had Gibbs caught by Franks in the covers a run later and Pembroke subsided to 135 all out.

Campbell (two for 49) bowled his namesake, Forties' skipper Gordon Campbell, to give Pembroke an early breakthrough but Gary Edwards and Thomas (30) added 76 for the second wicket to set up the victory and complete the double.

Edwards' hit four fours in his 53, his fifth league half century of the season.

Devonshire Stars took the points comfortably despite being bowled out for a modest 128. Worrell Bean topscored with 39 as Terence Corday and Paul Ross each picked up three wickets.

Skipper Gary Ascento (four for 52) and Gordie Hollis (four for 27) shared the attack, dismissing Sandys for 81 in the 27th over. Michael Corday was top scorer with 26.
