Glasford and Bonnet claim national criterium titles

Darren Glasford and Sarah Bonnet were crowned National Criterium champions on Sunday after the pair outduelled the rest of the field to claim the inaugural titles.

Riding through the streets of Hamilton, Glasford used patience and timing to lift the Open Men's crown while Bonnet was never really in any serious trouble in her pursuit of history in the Open Female's division.

The Open Male and Female Championships rode for 55 minutes and one lap after the time had elapsed, while the Junior Male and Female Championships raced for 40 minutes and one lap.

With more than 30 riders lining up for the Open Male division, it was Mike Lombardi who sprinted away from the pack early on and seemed to be in complete control of proceedings.

Yet, with time winding down before the final lap, Lombardi was caught by a chasing pack, sparking a frantic race to the finish between he and Glasford.

In the end it was Glasford who emerged victorious in a photo finish.

Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) president Peter Dunne was on the lead motorbike and said he was excited by the competition.

"It was a fantastic race to watch," said Dunne. "Mike Lombardi broke away early and appeared to have a good strategy but he seemed to lose his momentum and the chasing pack caught him in the dying stages.

"Darren was in the pack for most of the race and when he caught up with Mike, the pair had a sprint to the finish and I saw a photo of the race and I must say it was great to see the race finish in that manner.

"There were a few crashes during the race as well as mechanical problems, but there were a few guys who also knew that they weren't going to win and dropped out instead of riding around in circles knowing they couldn't win."

James Schaeffer finished third, while Scott Williams and Mark Hatherley rounded out the top five.

Bonnet beat out the likes of Earlena Ingham and Nicole Mitchell in the Open Female category, with Mitchell being involved in a crash just before the finish line.

Among the junior divisions, Dominique Mayho proved to be head and shoulders above the rest in the male category, outpacing Trey-shun Correia and Ryan Gunn.

Mark Godfrey and Nico Barclay rounded out the top five.

Kamryn Minors won the Junior Female race while Charlie Pilgrim and Kion Richardson won the Junior 'B' and 'C' divisions respectively.

"Dominique won his race and he is showing that he is on top of the junior pile and testing the seniors as well," said Dunne.

"The junior boys had quite a few young riders on the course and it was a pleasure to see that there are younger riders looking to get into the sport."
