Heaney leads the way in Renegades romp
Renegades I 56 Police I 12 Phil Heaney led Renegades with 26 points against an outnumbered Police side in first team rugby action at Nationals on Sunday.
Renegades led 21-0 after just 15 minutes through tries by Neville Ross, Sean Kelly and Peter Shillingford and three conversions from fly half Heaney.
Police flanker Dave Bird's break helped put centre Greg Lunn over for a try which he converted to get the Blues on the scoreboard. But their joy was short-lived.
Heaney replied with a try and a conversion after Rod Stewart and Shandy Purewal had combined with full back Ross to put Renegades in scoring position.
Scrum half Andrew Trinder then collected the ball from behind his own line and fed Ross who raced the length of the field to score his second try which Heaney converted. Heaney added another seven points with a try and a conversion to make it 42-7 at half-time.
After the break, Police problems worsened as they lost two players, flanker Sean Field and lock Keith Senior, through injury. And Renegades continued to pile on the points with Shillingford and Stewart scoring a try each and Heaney converting both.
Police hit back with a final try through scrum half Gareth Davies by which time it was all over.
Teachers I 27 Mariners I 18 Mariners came out looking for their first win of the year but couldn't take advantage of their scoring opportunities.
Early pressure from Teachers put the Greens six points down behind two Ross Webber penalty kicks. And while Mariners enjoyed a distinct territorial advantage, the Reds defence held firm against the running of Dave Conway, Daniel Olsen and Paul Reed.
A counter attack by Michael Montgomery saw the Reds' full-back place a clever chip in the Mariners' 22 which wing Heath Robinson scooped up to score under the posts. Webber added the conversion.
Corcoran kicked a penalty before half-time to make it 13-3 at the interval.
After the half Webber caught the Greens napping and pinched a loose Mariners' back line pass which he ran in to score and then added the conversion.
Mariners, however, were not to be outdone and replied ferociously.
A short range penalty saw Reed break a Dennis Cherry tackle to score a try which Hodgkins converted. Hodgkins then added a penalty to pull his team within seven of Teachers.
Mariners fed the ball out to their wing Rob Morgan who used his powerful bulk to force his way down the sideline before being tackled into touch on the five yard line. From there the ball was fed to Dennis Faries who danced over in the corner for a try which was not converted but cut Reds' lead to two.
Teachers turned up the heat at the finish with Robinson swerving by Morgan for a try which Webber converted.
