Miller, Troake set new marks in BASA meet
as Elisha Miller and Stephen Troake each bettered the existing marks among the 13-14 age bracket.
Miller wasted little time displaying her impresive form as she came through the day's opening event -- the 400 metres freestyle -- in fine style. The 13-year-old was timed in 4:57.31 seconds, erasing the old mark of 4:58.06 set by Alex Dowling in 1987.
Meanwhile, 14-year-old Troake, like Miller a member of Harbour Club, also showed great form in the 200 metres backstroke.
Troake clocked 2:23.90, which not only shattered the previous best of 2:26.60 established a year ago by Matthew Hammond, but also qualified him for the CCCAN Age Group Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico next month as it was under the triple A standard.
In addition the youngster did enough in the 100 metres freestyle to likewise qualify, touching the wall in 58.27.
Also notching qualifying times were Nuri Latham (11-12 100 freestyle), Paul Fox (11-12 200 freestyle), Matthew Hammond (13-14 200 backstroke) and Stephen Fahy, who achieved triple A times in all three events entered and has now qualified for four events -- 50 and 100 freestyle and 100 and 200 butterfly.
The final chance for youngsters to qualify will come with the national Swimming Championships, scheduled to take place June 16,17 and 18.
