Ming fired up for Town debut

Dandy Town are set to remove the shackles from star recruit Damon Ming who will look to come out firing this weekend after keeping his Premier Division powder dry since his last domestic start several years ago.

The waspish winger is now eligible for action after being released from his Bermuda Hogges franchise contract that prevented him playing locally, and is set for his second debut for Hornets who face North Village at Bernard Park on Sunday.

From Barnet to Maidenhead, Aylesbury to Hayes, Northwood to the United Soccer Leagues (USL), Ming has gathered a wealth of experience both in the UK and US over the past four seasons – and has vowed to use his forays into the semi-pro circuit to inspire his young team-mates at St. John's Field.

"It's going to take a little getting used to playing in a Premier Division match again," said the 30-year-old, who had a brief stint with Hornets earlier this decade.

"Being away from Bermuda really showed me the professional side of the game and helped me in areas I lacked as a player. With my experience I can hopefully come out and help the younger players at Dandy Town."

Ming's move to St. John's Field has seen him link up with former Bermuda national squad team-mates Meshach Wade, now coaching Hornets, Lashun Dill, Raymond Beach as well as a raft of promising rookies.

It was Hornets' thriving youth development structure that helped persuade Wade to leave newly promoted Hamilton Parish during the off-season, and Ming, too, insists the chance to shape the stars of tomorrow was also a deciding factor in his return to the Pembroke club.

"We have a good group of players coming up at Dandy Town, so it will be nice to get back out there," the ex-Somerset Trojan said.

"The last time I was at Dandy Town we had the likes of Lionel Furbert and Carlos Smith still in the frame, but we have a lot of young players coming up fresh and ready to force their way into the side.

"It's good to have a few older guys to help them out in their progression and that's one of the main reasons I came back.

"I'm not looking to do anything out of the ordinary, just to get back in the game.

"I have played with Heys Wolf, who actually set up my first league goal, along with Lashun (Dill) and Raymond (Beach). We will have a good team with a nice mixture and can give the fans value for their money."

Stevie Astwood, Bermuda Hogges other franchise professional, is also in contention for his first Premier Division start for more than 18 months when PHC take on Hamilton Parish at Southampton Oval on Sunday.
