New boys Parish enjoying Premier success
Hamilton Parish are the talk of the town after their stunning 1-0 victory over PHC on Sunday, a result that turned heads islandwide.
Taking six points from their first five games since returning to the Premier Division, Parish are more than showing that they can compete with the big boys and potentially could be a force in the top flight.
Victories over Devonshire Colts and reigning Premier Division champions PHC have sent shockwaves throughout the league, something that the Hot Peppers were hoping to do before the start of the season.
Inspirational goalkeeper Nigel Burgess, whose heroics against Zebras in their last match made sure the three points went to his side, said that the good start to the season was only the beginning although he warned that his team-mates had to remain consistent.
With his side showing the right mix of youth and experience, the Bermuda international insisted Parish had more to prove.
"It has been a high and low type of season so far," said Burgess. "We started strong and looked to be heading for a good start, but started beating ourselves and making things difficult in matches that we were in.
"We played fairly decent in our losses and in our wins we had more unity and that was the biggest thing.
"In our last game we had two of our new players, Chris Caisey jr and Nashun Smith, finally suit up and get on the pitch. They have been training with us all season so they came in and blended well in our last match.
"They showed on Sunday that they are ready to play for the team and it was a big help. They bring experience to the midfield which was what we were lacking a bit of."
Burgess showed why he is widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in Bermuda with a stunning game between the sticks for the new boys, thwarting anything and everything that Zebras threw his way.
The 1-0 victory was the first clean sheet for the shotstopper, whose side snatched all three points on the road courtesy of a 62nd minute penalty by strike ace Jamie Smith.
Yet he isn't too bothered with what people make of his goalkeeping ability as long as everyone on the team does their part.
With Parish level on points with PHC, a possible Dudley Eve spot could be within reach if they continue to play with heart and determination.
"My role is the team is to not lose the game for us. I can't win games because I don't score the goals, but I will do my part and try my best to keep clean sheets," added Burgess.
"I see myself as a vital member of the team and to help those who don't have experience at this level to keep their heads in matches.
"We have discussed that if we want to make the push for a spot in the Dudley Eve it would have had to start against PHC and we got the job done.
"We take each game at a time and Village are next so we will prepare for that.
"The Village game will be eagerly watched by many, so we will be looking to take points in that match as well as from Rangers in the following fixture.
"We are not here to say that we are in the top flight and our main goal is survival.
"We want to compete for honours and show that we are a team that needs to be respected."
