New facility a big boost for Bridge

Somerset Bridge president Marc Bean believes the new sports facility set to be built at White Hill Field is a step in the right direction for his club as they look to regain top-flight status in both national sports.

Bean, who attended yesterday's announcement of the new project where the clubhouse was dismantled, said he was thrilled Government would be upgrading the West End venue, stating it would be in the best interests of Bermuda sport.

"As the president of the club, I'm thrilled this opportunity has been given to us," said Senator Bean. "I am extremely pleased that the building is being demolished and a new facility will take its place.

"Government owns the property and we are honoured to be the historical landlords of this area for some 40-plus years. It's obvious this place has the facilities to accommodate the tasks that lie ahead.

"It is important to develop a facility that is multi-faceted and can be used for many types of sports, not just cricket and football.

"Look at Boulevard and Young Men's Social Club, they have been just given their own venue which has a lot of potential.

"The focus isn't solely about White Hill Field, but in terms of supplementing our National Sports Centre so our national bodies have more top-class facilities."

Somerset Bridge will continue to get the benefit of playing at the 'new-improved' White Hill and Bean reckons the project will be a turning point in the future of the club.

"Football is our strongest sport at the club, and this will help us along immensely," he said. "It is a wonderful opportunity for us to have the chance to use a pitch that will be one of the best on the Island.

"We have Kenny Thompson as our technical director, and with this plan in the pipes, we are very excited about the future.

"But sport can't be the only thing needed. We will look to have a few classrooms at the facility and I'm very confident of my club's strategy going forward.

"Hopefully this will coincide with the club getting back into the Premier Division."
