Robinson rescues draw for Cougars
Two controversial goals, some crowd violence and a hint of racism.
The game between Devonshire Colts and Devonshire Cougars last night had everything barring a red card, and Cougars can count themselves lucky that they didn't receive several of those.
It maybe that Cougars deserved some luck, having spent the entire game laying seige to the Colts goal, it took a Randy Robinson strike a minute from time to grab a draw.
And even then the goal was slightly dubious. Robinson received the ball from a quickly take free-kick after Kwame Steede had been fouled on the edge of the area.
No matter that the ball was moving when the kick was taken, or that the foul on Steede was a nudge at best, Robinson managed to do what his strikers had failed to do, put the ball in the back of the net.
They missed enough chances during the course of the game to have won three matches, and were slightly unfortunate to have gone behind at all.
With less than 15 minutes to go, Cougars goalkeeper Ricardo Brangman carried the ball outside his area while clearing it.
For a time it appeared that the offence had gone unnoticed, but with play having moved down the far end of the pitch, the assistant referee's flag was finally spotted a good minute later.
Play was pulled back, and Aljame Zuill calmly slotted the ball home from the free-kick in the 78th minute.
Chaos ensued. Cougars were livid, and jostled referee Ronue Cann. He could, and should, have sent several off. It sends a bad message when referee's do not clamp down on this type of behaviour.
Fortunately for Cougars he didn't and they still had enough time to grab a point, that should have been three.
