Trojans' chance to halt league leaders

With no Premier games scheduled for tomorrow, Gazette sports reporter Derek deChabert takes a look at First Division action:

St. David's v Somerset Trojans

The league leaders will look to take a vital step to separate themselves from the chasing pack with victory over Somerset at home.

Currently level on points with East End rivals St. George's, St. David's have only tasted defeat once this year in seven matches and with their strikers on song, they will be tough to beat on their home field.

Trojans are coming off a 2-2 draw with X'Roads. Currently in sixth position on 12 points – six points behind their opponents – a win would move them closer to the promotion spots.

If they are to remain in the hunt for promotion, Trojans must start taking points against the clubs above them. They can start tomorrow.

Prediction: Draw

X'Roads v BAA

What will be the result of this match is anyone's guess with these two sides having already battled in a close contest in the first round of the FA Cup – a game which saw BAA emerge as 2-1 winners.

X' Roads are coming off a hard-fought Shield Cup victory over Social Club in mid-week and will be looking to carry their momentum into league play and right the wrongs from their FA Cup exit.

The Wanderers will be trying to get out of the bottom two and three points against the cellar dwellers could see them leapfrog a place if other results go their way.

The question remains, can they repeat their FA performance?

Prediction: BAA 2-1

Prospect v Wolves

Prospect should have it all their own way in this affair with Wolves continuing to struggle.

Prospect are three points behind Trojans and Social Club and a win would propel them closer to those above as the season reaches the half way mark.

Wolves, on the other hand, haven't shown up at their matches this season with one victory and 22 goals conceded already.

Expect nothing more than three points for Prospect in this one.

Prediction: Prospect 2-0

St. George's Colts v Ireland Rangers

A late strike in their previous match saw St. George's take all three points against Eagles and they will need to show the same concentration to emerge victorious from this encounter.

After being dumped out of the FA Cup by Tuff Dogs, Colts will be looking for promotion at the very least from the current campaign.

Having the stingiest defence in the league will go a long way towards achieving their main goal but they will have to be wary of Rangers.

The men from Dockyard have continued to prove critics wrong as they have more than held their own thus far in the season.

But now comes one of their toughest challenges in a trip to Wellington Oval.

Having already lost to St. David's, they will try not to make it zero for two against East End teams.

Prediction: St. George's 1-0

Young Men's Social Club v Somerset Eagles

Young Men's Social Club will be looking to bounce back from their mid-week exit from the Shield at the hands of X' Roads.

Goals from Clay Darrell and Nathan Simons were not enough to save their side from being bounced out at the first hurdle and they will need to come ready to play against an Eagles side who won their last game against Wolves.

Eagles are now two points behind the leaders and three points would see them continue to pressure the front runners, who both face tricky matches this weekend.

Prediction: Eagles 2-1
