Simons appointed to Olympic Commission

Judy Simons

Bermuda Olympic Association president Judy Simons has been named to the Working Commission for the Modernisation of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC).Simons will be one of 15 members of the Working Commission, which will begin setting out a strategy for the modernisation of ANOC and its programmes at an inaugural meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on 18 October. She is the only woman to have been named to the Commission.Simons has long been a vocal advocate for modernisation of the Olympic Solidarity Programme, under which National Olympic Committees receive funding from the International Olympic Committee. She was appointed to the Commission by ANOC president, His Excellency Sheijk Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.Simons said: “I am excited to be part of the Working Commission for the Moderisation of ANOC. I see my role as being a strong advocate for NOCs and athletes from smaller jurisdictions.“In such jurisdictions — and Bermuda is clearly among them — athletes contend with higher costs of living and more limited access to local training facilities, which can lead to higher training costs. These are factors that should be considered by ANOC as they look at reshaping their funding.”Simons, who succeeded John Hoskins in 2008, is up for re-election in December and is keen to build on the foundations her BOA team have laid over the last four years.“I have declared by interest in standing and to the best of my knowledge there is no one interested in challenging me,” she said.“I believe that in my first four years I have done a good job and that we have a great team. I think my first four years were still a learning curve and I would to serve a second term to try and fulfill some of the obligations of what I’ve set out to do.”Joining Simons on the Commission are Kevan Gosper, Australia (chairman), Gunilla Lindberg, Sweden (ANOC secretary general), Marwan Maghur, Libya, Gilbert Grésenguet, Central African Republic, Julio Maglione, Uruguay, Ricardo Contreras, Mexico, Wei Jizhong, People’s Republic of China, Yong Sung Park, Republic of Korea, Alexander Kozlovsky, Russian Federation, Janez Kocijancic, Slovenia, Barry Maister, New Zealand, Ricardo Blas, Guam, Lawrence F Probst III, United States of America and Michael Larry Romany, Trinidad.
