Rosalie Best with the Ten Pin Bowlers Cup Match trophy.

St George’s’ ten-pin bowlers will be hoping their cricketers can follow in their footsteps in the two-day classic this week.It was the East Enders who triumphed in the ‘Cup Match’ bowling tournament which takes place every year prior to the big game at the Warwick Lanes. In the 21st edition of the event, St George’s came out on top by ‘seven’ runs.Fans of the two cricket clubs met at the Lanes to play a simulated game of cricket. The format was designed by bowling enthusiast Lionel Dowling and has survived up to this date.Dowling explained that the contest is carried out with terms familiar with cricket.Three games bowled are referred to as ‘innings’. A ‘duck’ is recorded when a bowler rolls his/her first ball in any one frame down the gutter, totally missing all ten pins; a ‘clean bowled’ is recorded when a 7-10 split remains unconverted; ‘caught out’ is leaving an open 10th frame; hitting a ‘four’ is getting two consecutive strikes; a ‘six’ is three consecutive strikes; ’half-century’ is four consecutive strikes; and a ‘century’ is five consecutive strikes; a ‘LBW’ is leaving the 1-5 sleeper unconverted, and a ‘run out’ is the 4-6-7-10 split.Players are awarded a prize of their choice if they get a strike when the headpin in red.Twenty three St George’s fans turned out for last week’s competition and selected Rosalie Best as their captain.
