Governor invites public to apply to join defence boards
People interested in joining the Royal Bermuda Regiment’s defence or promotions boards have been invited to apply by Rena Lalgie, the Governor.
Ms Lalgie has called on “suitably qualified” candidates to come forward as she expressed the need for an “open and fair” process for appointments to statutory bodies.
The Governor said: “As commander-in-chief of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, I welcome expressions of interest from members of the public who are passionate about community and voluntary service.
“Through this process we hope to find people with the relevant experience and enthusiasm who are up to meeting the challenges of ensuring good governance and the opportunities that quality strategic leadership can bring to the regiment.
“The Royal Bermuda Regiment plays an important role in the security and safety of our island, not only on land but also on sea.
“In joining one of these boards, you will be making a positive contribution to the regiment’s continued development.”
Ms Lalgie issued the invitation a day after she announced that she would be calling on those with the skills and knowledge required to make a contribution to apply for statutory bodies which fall under her purview.
The Governor said: “I am committed to ensuring an open and fair process for appointments to the statutory bodies for which I am responsible.
“The work of these boards is vital to good governance, and I would encourage those who believe they possess the requisite knowledge, skills and experience to make an effective contribution to the work of the boards to submit an expression of interest.”
A Government House spokeswoman said that membership requirements vary by board and are decided in accordance with the Constitution or legislation.
The spokeswoman did not respond to a request on Wednesday to specify which boards fall under the Governor’s powers of appointment.
Closing date for expressions of interest in the two regimental boards is September 30.
